Bill Splitter
Split a bill among people
About This Calculator
The bill splitter calculates each person's share when dining out or sharing expenses. It handles tip calculation, even or uneven splits, and shows both the pre-tip and post-tip amounts per person. This is one of the most frequently used everyday math calculations.
Formula
Tip Amount = Subtotal × (Tip% / 100)
Total = Subtotal + Tip
Per person (equal) = Total / Number of people
Example Calculation
$120 dinner bill, 18% tip, 4 people
- Tip = $120 × 0.18 = $21.60
- Total = $120 + $21.60 = $141.60
- Per person = $141.60 / 4 = $35.40
Each person pays $35.40
Per-Person Cost (18% tip, equal split)
| Bill | 2 people | 3 people | 4 people | 6 people |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $40 | $23.60 | $15.73 | $11.80 | $7.87 |
| $60 | $35.40 | $23.60 | $17.70 | $11.80 |
| $80 | $47.20 | $31.47 | $23.60 | $15.73 |
| $120 | $70.80 | $47.20 | $35.40 | $23.60 |
| $200 | $118.00 | $78.67 | $59.00 | $39.33 |
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Etiquette suggests tipping on the pre-tax subtotal, but the difference is small. At 18% tip on a $100 meal with 8% tax, tipping pre-tax means $18 tip; post-tax means $19.44. Most people just tip on the total for simplicity.
What is a fair tip percentage?
In the US: 15% for adequate service, 18-20% for good service, 25%+ for exceptional. For takeout, 10-15% is customary. At buffets and coffee shops, 10% is typical. Tipping customs vary significantly by country.
How do I split a bill when people ordered different amounts?
This calculator splits equally. For unequal splits, each person calculates their own share, then applies the tip percentage to their individual food cost. Alternatively, total the bill including tip and pay proportionally.
Is it rude to split a bill?
Splitting bills is completely normal and expected in most social contexts. Many restaurants are accustomed to splitting checks. Be upfront with your server at the start of the meal rather than at payment time if you plan to split.
